1,777 IAS and 1,255 IPS posts are lying vacant, says government

THE shortage of IAS and IPS officers in the country is increasingly becoming a cause of worry for the government. In a reply to three Rajya Sabha MPs on Thursday, the government has given the exact break-up of the authorized strength vis-à-vis the shortage of IAS, IPS and Indian Forest Service officers:
As many as 1,777 vacancies of Indian Administrative Service officers, and 1,255 posts of Indian Police Service (IPS) are lying vacant, the government informed in Parliament. In case of Indian Forest Service officers, the number of vacancy is 378.
Here is the break-up as on January1, 2012:
IAS: Authorized Strength: 6154, Officers-in-position: 4,377, Shortage: 1,777
IPS: Authorized Strength: 4,730, Officers-in-position: 3,475, Shortage: 1,255
IFoS: Authorized Strength: 3,078, Officers-in-position: 2,700, Shortage: 378
In a written reply to a question by HK Dua, Rama Chandra Khuntia and Sanjay Raut in the Rajya Sabha, minister of state in PMO V Narayanasamy however added that the government has increased annual intake of IAS and IPS officers under direct recruitment quota. Also, a third mode of recruitment, namely the Limited Competitive Examination has been introduced for recruitment into IPS.

Action and Appointments
a) Ranjit Sinha, a 1974 batch Bihar cadre IPS officer, has been appointed as Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years with effect from the date of assumption of charge. He will succeed  AP Singh, a 1974 batch IPS, on his retirement on November 30, 2012.
b) The ACC has approved that Dr GSG Ayyangar, 1987 batch Manipur cadre IAS, would be “moved of out NATGRID” and be considered for another department.
c) Three 1985 batch Indian Revenue Service have been empanelled for appointment to the post of joint secretary or equivalent at the Centre. The officers are Amrit Pal Singh, Ms Archna Pandey Tewari and Ms Manoranjan K Virk.
