Yu is one of many defectors from impoverished provinces of North Korea who escape to the South for greener pastures. Yu was a surgeon who managed a job in a trading company in South Korea before joining Seoul metropolitan government. But…
he is now charged with spying and breach of South Korean civil services.
The accusation: The 33-year-old civil servant passed details of over 10,000 fellow defectors to Pyongyang’s security services.
An analysis done by London-based Financial Times says, North Korean activity in South Korea is “less conspicuous than during the cold war years, when its agents made repeated attempts to murder former leaders Park Chung-hee and Chun Doo-Hwan”. In fact, South Korea does not immediately welcome North Korean defectors, currently about 25,000. They study the new-comers for at least three months before allowing them to lead a routine life.
Fleeing North Korea has been a common phenomenon for decades now. Some defectors however enter China but can’t make it to South Korea. The statistics of Northerners entering South Korea vary every year. According to reports, 2,927 North Koreans entered developed South in 2009. The number was reduced to 1,508 in 2012.
Commentators say young North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un’s tough measures including installation of new fences and camera systems on the Chinese side of the Yalu river have made it tough for North Korean defectors to switch side.
