WHO says a police officer retires at 60? The Delhi Police’s advertisement tagline says: Talent does not come with an expiry date. In an initiative called Delhi Police Retired Talent, it has appealed organizations to hire their men and women who are “fit and young even at sixty”. In its official website, delhipolice.nic.in, it has given details of 40 policemen including their…
earlier assignments, ranks, contact details etc. Its advertisement, which has appeared in some of the national dailies, says: Hire them and see them play an indispensable part in your organization.
ACP Harish Kumar, for example, has just retired. He worked as public relations officer and had also served in Special Protection Group -- the elite force of PM security. Similarly, Mohan Singh Dabas was SHO in Sadar Bazar and Rajaouri Garden. He was also a part of UN peace keeping force deployed at Kosovo. Dabas finally became Assistant Commissioner of Police in Delhi Police’s crime branch. Another ACP who retired earlier this year, Parvinder Singh, had 32 years of experiences in working with Delhi Police. He was also a part of the security deployed in New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to rules, retired officers can take up private jobs only after a cooling off period of one year. If an officer takes up a private job within one year of his retirement, he simply needs to take formal permission from the government by demonstrating that he did not touch any file of his would be employer in the last three years of his service. There are a few other conditions as well. The officer also needs to disclose his would-be pay package to the government.
In fact, many retired bureaucrats now take up full-time assignments in companies or social sector. But, the Delhi Police’s initiative to go an extra mile and advertise its 60-year-old talents is something unheard of. Only time will say whether other government agencies too will replicate the Delhi Police model to keep their senior citizens young at sixty.
