FOLLOWING the 2G spectrum scam during the UPA regime, there was one bureaucrat in the ministry of telecom who designed and conducted the 3G AND Wi-Max spectrum auctions that fetched the Central government whopping about Rs 1,06,260 crore (USD 24.5 billion). It was the first time spectrum was auctioned in India in a transparent manner and that too through a massive e‐auction route. Deepak in devising and executing a highly successful 3G auction. On Friday, this 1982 batch IAS who is currently an additional secretary in the department of commerce was appointed as secretary in the department of electronics and IT (DeitY). The post was lying vacant after incumbent RS Sharma of 1978 batch IAS moved to telecom regulator, TRAI as its chairman.
An MSc degree in electronics from Banglore University and MBA from prestigious IIM, Ahmedebad (with specialization in marketing and finance), Deepak began his career in IAS as an executive magistrate in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh before becoming SDM in Saharanpur. From 1997 to 2002, he was in a foreign assignment in United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). In the government of UP, he held several positions including principal secretary of Industrial Development Export Commissioner, UP and managing director of UP Export Corporation Limited, deputy managing director of State Industrial Development Corporation, UP and Commissioner of Faizabad and then Meerut.
He also served as chairman and managing director of State Trading Corporation (STC) of India and was a member of the board of directors in telecom companies such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). Currently, he has been holding additional charge of chairman and MD of India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO).

  1. Whats a big deal in this job. Any other officer specially from the most honest sevice i.e. IRS (IT) would have done this financial matter better and would have fetched more revenue for the government.
