ON Police Commemoration Day today (Oct 21), a new think tank is born –The Police Foundation and Institute. Formally inaugurated today, it is a police research institute with an idea of bringing together police, other bureaucrats, academia, lawyers, media, business and civil society leaders—all in one platform. Chaired by ex-IPS and former DGP of Assam and Uttar Pradesh Prakash Singh, the executive committee of the think-tank includes veteran banker and non-executive chairman of HDFC Deepak Parekh, former home secretary GK Pillai, two former Intelligence Bureau directors viz…
PC Haldar and Shyamal Datta, former CBI director RK Raghavan etc. Apart from Parekh who had earlier headed a number of government panels, the executive committee of the think-tank also includes S Parasuraman, director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and Maja Daruwala, director of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI). Former SPG veteran and ex-DGP of Meghalaya N Ramachandran is the president and CEO of the organization.
“What the Police Foundation and Institute seeks to do, is to provide a high energy platform, the intellectual capital and an enabling ecosystem to realize this vision and to prepare the young leaders as well as the rank and file, for this challenging journey”, the objectives of the new think-tank say.
It is expected to be independent with an objective to work in improving policing in India through policy advocacy and developing knowledge to deal with the policing challenges. In fact, Indian Police Foundation was launched on November 4, 2014.
The Police Foundation and Institute will have two functional arms. First, there is an apex body responsible for the governance of the society and for providing leadership and strategic guidance.
And then, it will house a professional scientific research institution that is expected to work through applied research and knowledge development, standards setting, capacity building, and leadership development.
