IN MID-1990s, PVRK Prasad was one of the most influential bureaucrats in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). died of cardiac arrest in a Hyderabad hospital on Monday.

An MA in English literature, he got into IAS in 1966 and was allotted the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He himself belonged to the state of Andhra Pradesh, now divided into two states — Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. In mid-1970s, he was the collector of Khammam district, now a part of Telangana. In the state, he worked at various capacities in the departments of legal affairs, information and broadcasting, excise, rural development, water resources etc. He served as the executive officer of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

At the Centre, he first joined the department of surface transport as a joint secretary equivalent in 1988. He was appointed as the chairman of Vizag Port Trust. But he hogged the limelight when he joined the PMO in 1992 and became a close aide to the then prime minister Rao. 

Later, he went back to the state where he retired in August 2001. 

Apart from his post-graduation in English literature, Prasad was also a graduate in law and a certificate holder in management too.

Among the popular books that he had authored include Thirumala Leelamrutham, Naham Kartha and Wheels behind the Veil.
