A SENIOR IRS-IT officer of 2004 batch, Vijay Kumar Singh, won a marathon on Sunday held at 11,500-feet above the sea level! 29 nations. Singh could complete the race in just 3 hours, 50 minutes and 33 seconds.
The Income-Tax officer, as quoted by media reports published in Ahmedabad, says how he took up the challenge of running fast in an area known for less oxygen; and reached Leh a week before the competition to acclimatise with the conditions there. Early this year, he also ran the Rajkot marathon and the Delhi marathon.
Among the other marathons that he participated were Mumbai Marathon, Delhi Half Marathon, Bengaluru Marathon, Sabarmati Marathon and Goa River Marathon.
According to an article published in Ahmedabad Mirror, Singh is the first Indian civil servant (not just the IRS) to qualify and run the Boston Marathon.
He developed interest in long-distance running when he was posted at National Academy of Direct Taxes in Nagpur five years ago. He first participated in Airtel Half Marathon in 2012.
