Jharkhand on Monday. During the afternoon, a condolence meeting was also organised at Jharkhand police headquarters.
Kumar originally hails from Samastipur in Bihar. A graduate in engineering before getting into IPS, he was serving at NIA when he died. In 2016-17, he served as a director in the department of heavy industry at the Centre, on a deputation.
In the state, he served as the Superintendent of Police in a number of districts — Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Simdega and West Singhbhum Chaibasa.
He was married to the daughter of BJP Member of Parliament Jagdambika Pal. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
In a condolence message tweeted on Sunday, IPS Association said: “We lost one of our own, ever smiling, very helpful and a bright officer today. And we're shaken! #Jharkhand cadre 1998 batch IPS officer Praveen Kumar, posted as DIG @NIA_India left for heavenly abode. He won many battles, but lost this one to #cancer. Our condolences and prayers.”
State chief minister Raghubar Das and a number of politicians, civil servants, social activists expressed their condolences. Chief secretary Sudhir Tripathi and DGP DK Pandey were among the officers who paid their floral tributes when the mortal remains of the officer were kept for public view.
