Know Your Babu: New commerce secretary Anup Wadhawan; 10 Things to Know


LAST week, the government announced the appointment of 1985 batch Uttarakhand cadre IAS — Anup Wadhawan, presently a special secretary in the department of commerce — as India’s new commerce secretary on July 31, 2018, when incumbent Ms Rita Teotia, 1981 batch Gujarat cadre IAS, retires. A former director in the PMO, a veteran in economic and commerce departments and also a PhD in economics, Wadhawan is already appointed as the OSD in the commerce department in the run-up to his elevation as secretary. Here are 10 things to know about India’s new commerce secretary:
1. Belonging to Delhi, Wadhawan was allotted Uttar Pradesh cadre after getting selected as an IAS. Later, he was shifted to Uttarakhand once the hill state was created after getting carved out of UP. 
2. He was special secretary in the department of commerce. Till July 31, he will serve as the officer on special duty (OSD) in the commerce department before taking over as its secretary.
3. In 2015-17, he was the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and then, additional secretary and special secretary in the department of commerce. 
4. Wadhawan was also the joint secretary and additional secretary in the department of financial services under the ministry of finance. 
5. For six years — between 2001 and 2006 — he was a director in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). He thus worked in both Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s and the Dr Manmohan Singh’s PMO.
6. He was on a study leave to USA between 1992 and 1995.
7. Wadhawan worked as additional collector in Almora and also collector in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh.   
8. He is a product of St. Xavier School, Delhi. 
9. Wadhawan is an MA and PhD in economics.
10. The officer will retire in June, 2021.
