Vishwesh Chaube, a 1980 batch IRSE officer and General Manager of the Northern Railway, has been appointed as Member (Engineering) in the Railway Board in place of MK Gupta, also an IRSE officer who is retiring on Thursday. IRSE or Indian Railways Service of Engineers, is a Group “A” service.

Before being elevated as the GM of Northern Railways, he served at various positions including GM of Kolkata Metro Railway, principal chief engineer of the South Eastern Railway and director of Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering (IRICEN), Pune.
His colleagues know him more as a trouble-shooter. He successfully handled various kisan agitations in Punjab and also the 2010 Kashmir valley agitation. During his tenure as divisional railway manager, he monitored the re-introduction of train services at a time when the destruction of railway property by the agitators was rampant in the valley of Kashmir. Choube was the founding director of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a schedule "A" company of the Indian Railways.
Choube undertook training at Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. He has also co-authored “Handbook for Track Maintenance” and also a report on introducing second phase of modernisation of track.
In an unrelated development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday appointed SS Deswal, 1984 batch Haryana cadre IPS, presently working as Director General (DG), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), as DG of Indo Tibetan Border Police
(ITBP).
